Painting the Maine Waterfront

Curated by Carl Little

September 15 - October 20, 2009
Reception: Thursday, September 17, 5:30PM- 7:30PM

“Painting the Maine Waterfront,” featuring the work of seven contemporary artists, will be on exhibit at the Penobscot Marine Museum September 15 through October 20, 2009.Works by George Bayliss, Gregory Dunham, Philip Frey, Katharina Keoughan, Nancy Morgan-Barnes, Linda Norton, and Amy Pollien have been brought together by guest curator Carl Little for a many-lensed view of Maine's working waterfront. Oils and watercolors in a variety of styles depict subjects ranging from skiffs on Monhegan to cargo ships at Sears Island. “The working waterfront has captivated artists for centuries,”says Little. “Here in Maine, perhaps because of its endangered status, the subject holds great appeal to painters.” Little is the author of Paintings of Maine and Winslow Homer and the Sea, and is a regular contributor to Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors and Working Waterfront.

On another note, I will be getting back to creating some more daily paintings this fall. The summer season was quite busy. Until then...

Philip Frey: Maine Harbors

Turquoise Glow, Stonington, acrylic on linen, 18 x 24 inches, (sold)

As you can see, I haven't posted work here for quite some time, perhaps a month. The reason is, I have been quite busy getting ready for my solo show "Philip Frey: Maine Harbors" at Courthouse Gallery Fine Art, June 14 - July 14, 2009. Artist reception June 14, 1-3pm. Catalog available.

“Philip uses his vibrant palette to capture the intense light and intricate compositions of Maine’s working harbors, including South Bristol, Corea, Sorrento, Stonington, and Monhegan” writes Karin Wilkes, director of Courthouse Gallery Fine Art.

Also, my work was featured in the Maine Home+Design April 2009 issue, One's to Watch: A look at Maine’s emerging artists commanding attention.

Enjoy.

Orange Pepper

Orange Pepper
acrylic on canvas
6 x 6 in.
$250

The "Orange Pepper" painting was a demonstration painting for a painting class I was teaching a few weeks ago. I set up four different colored peppers on top complimentary colored fabric. For example, the orange pepper was on a blue piece of fabric, red pepper on green fabric, etc. It was quite a fun still life to look at and paint. The student's paintings came out very well. Enjoy.
